... from Norman Cliff's scrapbooks,
about the people who lived there:
The groups ...
Quoted from How the Girl Guides Won the War:
“The Japanese felt that they should show the world that they cared well for their prisoners. They ordered all
Brownies, Cubs, Guides, and Scouts to put on their Scout uniforms, and had them photographed in their packs and
companies. The only clue to their whereabouts in Weihsien are the electric insulators between the wires, and a
guardpost number painted on a wall behind them. Although some of the Brownies tried to hide their feet from the
photographer, by 1944 none of them were wearing shoes.”

THE SALVATION ARMY BAND included many non-Salvationists.
Every Sunday afternoon it played the well known hymns of the Christian Church at certain points of the camp.

When the end of the war was approaching the bandsmen practised a "Victory March", a medley of the various Allied national anthems. For obvious reasons the air to the tune was omitted. When the American parachutists arrived, the band was at the front gate to welcome the liberators with this Victory March and other suitable pieces.

Mary remembers that during "Roll Call":
... "While we were waiting for the Japanese to arrive to count us at roll call, we Girl Guides practiced our Semaphore and Morse Code or we played leap frog. At our Girl Guide meeting we ended meetings by singing,
“Day is done,
Gone the sun,
From the sea, from the hills, from the hills, from the sky.
All is well,
Safely rest.
God is nigh.”
