Subject: New Eric Liddell biography to be released next week

The much anticipated Eric Liddell biography by prize-winning British sports journalist, Duncan Hamilton, will be released May 10, next Tuesday. For the Glory: Eric Liddell’s Journey from Olympic Champion to Modern Martyr, is available now on Amazon. Duncan Hamilton, who has won top awards for his books about British athletes, interviewed a good number of us in his search across three continents for the Eric Liddell story. Yes, Duncan and his wife toured Weihsien for several days, trying to get the feel of the place. In Toronto, he interviewed Liddell’s three daughters. In U.K., as well as interviewing some of you, he interviewed Joseph and Joyce Cotterill. Joseph was Eric’s room mate in the single men’s dormitory in Weihsien. Joyce was one of Eric’s science students and was with him in the hospital moments before he died. Duncan interviewed Chefusian, Stephen Metcalf, who became an assistant to Liddell in young people’s sports activities in the Weihsien. Eric gave Stephen his Olympic running shoes.

"The book is prefaced by a brief glimpe of Weihsien Civil Assembly Center internment camp where Liddell spent 694 days of his life.”

"One vignette of the many Hamilton shares encapsulates the simple strength of Liddell’s character. Midway through the camp’s 2.5-year existence, more than 300 of students, ages 6-16, from an inland mission school were brought to Wiehsien, and Liddell subsumed himself in helping them cope. 'Liddell became ‘Uncle Eric’ to dozens upon dozens of them,' Hamilton writes. ’If he’d told us the moon was square, we’d have believed him,’ said one, remembering his impact on their young lives.’ ”

"Moments in this book – just like Eric Liddell’s life – are achingly beautiful. His character resonates across time and distance, and I hope this book gains the wide readership it deserves. Although parts of it are emotionally wrenching, this would be a fine read for teens as well as adults."

Reviews on Amazon use words like “amazing book,” “amazing and captivating tale of courage, self sacrifice and grace under pressure. Hard to put down.”

Release of this biography has been targeted for the Rio Olympics that will be held in about three months. I hope that, like others of Duncan Hamilton’s books, For the Glory wiil be released in other languages.

When Duncan Hamilton and his wife visited me, I told him that the core of Eric Liddell’s character centered in his faith in God and that Duncan must make that the theme of his book. Let’s be praying that this book will affect lives.

You can order the book now.

Hi Mary,

Huang Yuelin asked if the book you wrote has Chinese version.
In fact, you mentioned in your previous email, "Chinese-English booklet for distribution in China. "
So it has Chinese translation.
