Dear Carinne,
One hundred years ! “One” century old. A date to celebrate. A birthday cake with just one candle to blow.
The best I can remember — for my fourth birthday in Weihsien (April, 1945) — was receivng a quarter of an “omelette” with a thin slice of spam ― cooked by my dad on a crooked stove ― in our small dark room of Block-22.
Un siècle parmi nous, heureuse et active, c’est merveilleux. Bravo. Merci, Carinne, de transmettre toutes nos félicitations à votre mère pour qui nous avons le plus grand respect.
Bien amicalement,
Léopold

Dear Leopold and Carinne:
wishing all a very happy New Year! and looking forward to a safer, healthier and more anxiety free New Year.
I too am covid weary and wonder how it will feel after this pandemic is over. I think of this as a war, with an unseen enemy.
How did our parents adjust to their freedom after Weihsien. It must not have been easy. I wonder how we will feel coming out of this our 2nd 'war'.
Thank you, Carinne for telling us about Solange's milestone birthday! Both my sister, Gabrielle and I called her when we first reconnected a year or so ago. Solange has achieved so much and must have given joy to so many! And is still teaching.
Please give her our very best wishes and many congratulations! I very much enjoyed the video she made for the Weihsien museum.
Blessings to all.
And my thanks too to Leopold and family for all they do and have done with this great Weihsien Paintings site.

Dear Leopold, Janette, Nicky and Pierre,
Thank you for your lovely Chinese New Year greeting.
I wanted to let you and the Weihsien group know that tomorrow, February 1, Solange Jacqueline MacLean (born de Saint Hubert) turns 100. She is doing wonderfully well, still teaching a weekly zoom ballet class, sewing daily and enjoying the visits of friends.
One of her dearest friends here in Virginia is Larissa Tung Berry who is both of Russian and Chinese descent. Larissa became close friends with several ex-prisoners after the war in Tientsin. Larissa continues to keeps in touch with the Dhunjishah family as well as Angela Cox.
Such a small world.
Solange/Jacqueline always enjoys reading the updates you post, Leopold. Thank you for your continued fantastic work on the website and keeping us all connected.
Our warmest wishes,
Carinne, daughter

Dear Leopold, Nicky, Janette and Pierre,
What a surprise to receive your good wishes for the Chinese
New Year tomorrow! I can still remember the festivities in
Tientsin- and also our visits to my father’s comprador to
wish him and his family a succesful and healthy New Year.
I had learned the phrase “kung fu ya tsen” (might not be
correct after 80 years} and there we were treated to all
kinds of chinese delicacies.
Hope you all are well and have not been infected by the
Covid. After so many months I have noticed that the long
isolation and fear of the disease have affected me in many
ways. See if this will all disappear soon!
My heartiest greetings to all of you,
Anne de Jongh
