Re: [weihsien_camp] From the Courtyard of the HaDocument of Office of Weifang Municipal Committee of the CPC
Dear All,
It will be interesting to see what changes are made to the museum which I thought already impressive.
As a reminder, there is a gallery on my website of what the museum looked like when I last visited in 2016 via this rather long link:
https://nicholaskitto.photoshelter.com/gallery/Weihsien-Internment-Camp/G0000lFNqMk8zmEg/C000081ny4P.PZWc
We were not on an official visit at the time and therefore did not ask to visit the buildings in the school compound as the school itself was clearly busy.
Kind regards
Nick

Re: [weihsien_camp] FW: From the Courtyard of the HaDocument of Office of Weifang Municipal Committee of the CPC
I sincerely hope that one day I will be able to visit this now historic Museum and experience a bit of how the prisoners and those on this list lived during that time.
So many journals of my late Aunt's (Ruth Kunkel) were confiscated by the Japanese and she remained an ex-pat after the war so we were not able to really learn more than what letters survived her and my grandparents attic, along with the shared stories of those who were there.
I have enjoyed all the images others have posted to the Weihsien-Paintings website and subsequent visits to this profound historical place and look forward to more until I can get there myself.
My thanks to the Weifang Municipal Committee for keeping this place and the memories, good and bad, alive for all of us to remember and respect.

Re: [weihsien_camp] FW: From the Courtyard of the HaDocument of Office of Weifang Municipal Committee of the CPC
Dear Leopold,
First hope you & all your family are well & managing the days during
the restrictions.
It is quite The honour to be selected as the eight Major Historical &
cultural site - such a recognition. Certainly gratifying to all who lived
during internment. It will be interesting to see the results .
Perhaps Tom & I will return one day- visit Tsingtao & return to Weihsien.
WE did make a visit to the old Japanese villa on our own - there were
many photos there - I did visit the villa 2005 but it is further away from
the hospital which was the main focus 2015. Tsingtao is worth seeing
& havent been there except from airport & by bus to Weihsien 2005.
I/ve read Ida Talbot/s diary - few month each nite & called Christine
Sancton but she doesnt know most of the people her mother wrote about,
So many mentioned ended in Vancouver. A remarkable account with
much detail & Ida a very fervent Catholic attended early mass most days.
Cant believe she baked cakes/pies & desserts - entertained with canapes
worked- sewed & still wrote such descriptive pages late at nite mostly
by peanut oil lamps.
Hope you/ll hear more of the progress of the museum.
cheers angela-.

Dear Mr. Leopold Pander,
We are very glad to receive your reply. Thank you very much.
Mr. Sui Shude is a translator of the Overseas Chinese Office of Weifang Government. Previously, the Overseas Chinese Office was responsible for the exhibition of the Courtyard of the Happy Way and Weihsien concentration camp.
Weifang Museum is the National first level Museum. In May 2019, the Overseas Chinese Office officially handed over the management power of the Courtyard of the Happy Way to Weifang Museum (a professional museum organization directly under the China Government), and established the Courtyard of the Happy Way&Weihsien Concentration Camp Museum.
In September 2019, the Courtyard of the Happy Way&Weihsien Concentration Camp Museum was selected as National Demonstration Bases for Patriotism Education by the Chinese Government, and in October 2019, the Museum was selected as the eighth Major historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level by the China Government.
At present, the Museum consists of seven former sites: shadyside hospital, bungalows in front of shadyside hospital (two), Wenhua Building (the old Japanese Villa) in Guangwen Middle School, Wenmei Building in Guangwen Middle School, old No.1 Expert Building in the Weifang People’s Hospital, old No.2 Expert Building in the Weifang People’s Hospital.
In order to better record this history, Weifang Museum, in cooperation with Weifang Government, on the basis of protecting the original buildings, remake the relevant exhibition contents, and show the history of the Courtyard of the Happy Way and Weihsien Concentration Camp to the world in a new and modern form. At present, the renovation work of the shadysid hospital and the new exhibition contents are in progress. It is expected that they will be completed in July 2020 and open in the second half of this year. At that time, we will welcome survivors of Weihsien Concentration Camp to visit the Museum and guide the relevant work.
Now, our new exhibition content is in the process of production.
Mr. Sui Shude
and Mr. Li Yuejin (Mr. Sui’s previous leadership) has provided some photo materials and text materials to the Museum.
As mentioned in your letter, you have given Mr. Sui some materials related to the concentration camp. Would you please make a form of materials at that time for us to helps us collect and sort out these historical materials? We are the official Museum organization of the government, with a professional cultural relics protection team. We have the strength to provide better protection for these items and materials, so as to spread them to the world, so that people can understand this history and cherish peace.
I’d like to send you some photos of our ongoing work, such as photos of building protection, new exhibition renderings, etc. But the mailbox limits the size of the file. It can not be sent. Can you give me another way?
We are looking forward to your reply.
Best wishes.

Dear Mr. Neal Wu,
I have — indeed — received your message but would be grateful if you could give me more information.
In your e-mail, you do not mention Mr. Sui Shude.
Since the creation of the Weihsien-Paintings' website, I have always been in contact with Mr. Sui who welcomed us when we went to visit China ― and Weifang ― and who cared for us as to visiting interesting places and appreciating the excellent Shandong food.
As far as I know, Mr. Sui is the person in charge of the old Weihsien Concentration Camp as well as its museums.
The first one was in one of the old Japanese villas and the new museum ― the one we visited in 2015 ― was located in what had been the Hospital of the Camp: "Shady Side Hospital".
I read in your letter that you are going to rebuild a museum. How big? Where will that be?
Are you going to demolish our "old" Shadyside Hospital?
What has happened to Mr. Sui Shude?
Of course ― as you know ― my website is free access and non-profit. I am still the webmaster of it and an ex-prisoner of the Concentration Camp. I was 4 years old in 1945.
Now, 75 years later, many of us have died. We were just children in 1945. Of what is left on our website: http://www.weihsien-paintings.org are all our memories put together in one place. You are free to use it all for your museum for the benefit of the Chinese people and visitors from abroad.. I have given to Mr. Sui Shude all the necessary information for his museum. You must still have it.
In 2015, the Weifang authorities have organised a meeting with many ex-prisoners of Weihsien and we have all given you some of our belongings related to the Camp. All those items should now be exposed in the actual museum.
I will be, of course, ready to help the Weifang authorities in the measure of my competence.
Best regards,
Leopold Pander

Dear website office,
First, I am not good at English, if there is any disrespect, please forgive me.
My name is Neal Wu. I am living in Weifang (formerly known as Weihsien), Shandong Province, China. And I am working in The Courtyard of the Happy Way & Weihsien Concentration Camp Museum. In fact, Weifang Museum is sparing no effort to rebuild a new museum that is named the Courtyard of the Happy Way & Weihsien Concentration Camp Museum with Weifang Government. The Museum will exhibit the history of the courtyard of the happy way and the history of the concentration camp.
So, we may need your help. Such as, some data about the history of the concentration camp, and some pictures or photos. And something that like survivor's diary, or some items retained by survivors, etc. Therefore, we may need you to provide us with the contact information of survivors. We would appreciate it if you could help us to communicate with the survivors.
In a word, we need your help very much.
Best wishes and looking forward your reply.

Neal Wu
