Hosting a website is just a few dollars annually. I will offer to host the site as a live reference site if you wish.
Your stewardship has been and continues to be amazing. Thank for this.

Dear Leopold:
Thank you for finding this great solution to our problem. I have often wondered what was going to happen to all your hard work on the Weihsien site.
Thank you for sharing this knowledge.
Hope all is improving in Belgium. It has been a long 66 weeks!

Dear Miles,
To your question: What will happen “after” made me think about it more seriously (…).
For the next generation, I am not too worried. Let us hope that the website will still exist in a read-only form. I do not expect my nephew to take the time to add new data to all that we already have.
… But for the following generations ― Indeed, the website could disappear altogether ―
(...) big question.
Ron Bridge gave me the solution because I know that all his precious listings are safeguarded at the Imperial War Museum in London so I contacted them and they graciously agreed to keep a backup SD-memory card for the Weihsien-Paintings’ website in their archives. I plan to send them an update more or less once a year ― as long as I am fit to work on it.
So (…) let us hope for the best …
Best regards,
Leopold

Hello
I have looked at your Weihsien Paintings website a few times over the year and you have a drawing of my grandfather (also Miles Halton) on the site. It’s a great online resource, but I sometimes worry that as things fade from living memory websites such as these tend to drop off the internet. Do I need to worry about this or should I copy to my hard drive the pages I want to preserve?
Best wishes
Miles

Dear Mr. Leopold Pander,
Your suggestion is very important to us. Thank you.
During this period, one of our working groups, the cultural relics collection group, collected many cultural relics. We are constantly improving the relevant information about Weihsien concentration camp. We are also digitizing some of the content.
The website is under construction. This website is a bilingual website in Chinese and English, including many functions, such as online reading, online inquiry, online booking visit, etc. We hope that more people can learn about this history through this website. Therefore, we hope to improve the website as much as possible, and then put the website online. This is a big project.
In addition, dear Mr. pander, once again, we hope you can publish the attached form on the website and call on everyone to fill in this form.
- download the "form" in *.pdf ...
- download the "form" in *.docx ...
We very much hope that we can sort out the archival information of the people, which is a very precious historical material. We want to remember everyone, everyone who was in the camp. We hope that in the future, when future generations see these documents, they will recognize the importance of peace and promote peaceful development all over the world.
At present, we are negotiating with the Imperial War Museum, hoping to obtain more material materials from them. If you have related items you can donate to us, thank you very much. The museum will protect every precious historical relic.
Best wishes.

Neal Wu

Dear Mr. Wu,
Many thanks for your previous message informing me of a new display ― Room #5 ― in the renovated Weifang Museum for Weihsien. My family is indeed very honoured by this new layout though you must keep in mind that we are not the only donator for your now well-documented museum. I have, of course, transferred your message, photos and video to the Weihsien Paintings’ website to allow others to express their opinions or suggestions.
http://weihsien-paintings.org/TheGroup/messages/2021-06/2021-06.htm
Yes, I have a suggestion:
What you have exposed is well visible but static ― behind closed window screens.
Behind a glass frame, is a book: “The Children of Weihsien” and only the cover page is visible. Let us presume that your visitors should like to have a look inside the book ― to open the pages and read the texts within.
As in other museums, worldwide, I imagine a large interactive screen that invites the visitor to search inside the book and read the texts in the original version and also ― why not ― in a translated version: in Chinese. You have the pictures, the texts and the knowhow to do so.
What you can also imagine is to show a well-visible QR code above the display to enable your visitors to read the book directly from our website on their smartphones or i-pads ― http://www.weihsien-paintings.org or from any other way ― your own website in Chinese ― with complementary information if you desire.
… just a suggestion.
Best regards.

Dear Mr. Leopold Pander,
Recently, we have built a new exhibition hall, which is mainly for your family.
I have taken photos and videos of the items displayed in your theme exhibition hall. This information has been sent to you as an attachment. Please check if there is any omission. If there is any omission, the museum, as an official organization, will try our best to find the missing items.
If you have any suggestions for the museum, please feel free to let us know.
Best wishes.

You mention that your grandfather, Mr. Lawless went to the International War Crimes Tribunal 1946 in Tokyo to testify in favour of Mr. Izu, our camp Commandant. This fact is also mentioned in Norman Cliff’s scrapbooks when Mr. McLaren ― the head of our committee in Weihsien ― also went to Tokyo for the same reason.

I just had my sister Janette on the phone this morning. We think that your grandfather is mentioned in the book: “Midnight in Peking” or “Life and Death in Old Peking” all about the inquiry of Pamela Werner’s murder in Peking – 1937. We will have to check that info but you can buy the two books ― they are both very interesting ! 😊

Subject: PETER JOSEPH LAWLESS & CLARISSE BALMER-GERBER LAWLESS
Dear Mr. Pander,
I hope the following information regarding my grandparents will be helpful for your archives.
Peter Joseph Lawless, an Irishman, was born in County Wexford in 1880. Clarisse Balmer–Gerber was born in Montreux, near Bern, Switzerland. They were married in 1910 and had two daughters. Georgia was born with Down’s Syndrome and lived her life in Switzerland.
Mary Mavis (my mother) was born in Tientsin, North China, 1920.
My grandfather was the Chief of Police in Tientsin. At the time Tientsin was lifetime leased to the British Crown. I was told that my grandmother was a missionary, and after reading the Helsby’s book, I would assume with the Orient Missionary Society.
In 1934 my grandfather knew of the impending invasion of North China by the Japanese and sent my mother who was 14 years of age to Switzerland. My mother was never able to speak of those days of leaving her parents and traveling such a distance. I only knew that my grandparents were in a prison camp, Weihsien, during the war.
In Meredith and Christine Helsby’s book, He Goes Before Them…Even Into Prison, my grandmother is mentioned on page 102. Her name is slightly misspelled, which is certainly understandable. She died of typhoid fever just eight days before the Americans liberated the camp.
After the war my grandfather testified at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, also known as the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal. He eventually settled in Taunton, Somerset, England.
My mother left Switzerland to live in London in 1937. She was in nursing school at the time of the Blitz and survived forty nights of the German bombing. She was a registered nurse when she met and married my father, an American soldier from Poteet, Texas. After the war was over, she sailed on the HMS Queen Mary (a mother and baby ship) with my sister to the United States.
My grandfather came to the States to visit my family in 1950. We lived in San Antonio, Texas, and I remember him clearly…a large man who wore walking shorts and long socks, something American men did not do in the ‘50’s. He dearly loved my sister and me, and wrote frequent letters to us. Grandfather died in 1952 and is buried in Taunton, Somerset, England.
I remember my mother telling me that my grandparents loved the Chinese people.
Sincerely,
Clarisse Blair

Dear Miles,
Thanks very much for your message and interest in our website.
From the beginning, more than twenty years ago, and still now, this website is non-profit and free access ― patiently built, page by page with all our memories of those remote days in WWII. Many of the ex-prisoners who have helped me to create this website are no longer living.
What will happen after? Only goodness knows!
You are therefore free to recopy whatever you think interesting on a HDD. It is the reason why many files are: *.pdf. ― because I’d rather read a book on a paper support than on a screen.
This whole website is more than 3K-pages thick and takes 26Go of memory space on my provider’s HDD.
Glad you enjoy the whole thing 😊
Best regards,
Leopold

Dear Mrs. Knuppe,
Thank you so very much for writing to me. My heart is so full this morning, as I received your note and one from Mrs. Gay (Talbot) Stratford. You kind words touched me deeply. I was named for her and truly hope I honor her. Mrs. Stratford wrote of a little song that the group sang at the end of the girls’ meetings. My grandmother was Swiss, as you might remember, and I am sure she had a lovely voice.
I am in the process of gathering a few pictures, one of her and one of my grandfather Peter. He came to the states in 1952 and I remember him clearly.
I do have a lovely picture of her and one of my grandfather, clearly taken in China, standing beside some yard sculptures of Chinese animals, for no better description. I will post those along with my memories of what I know about my grandparents.
Again, I am so grateful for your note.
Sincerely,
Clarisse
