Subject: Irene Jarrett, interned Weihsien

Hello,

My mother Irene Jarrett was interned at Weihsien with her family. I am researching her life. Do you have any records of her or the Jarrett family in camp? I have found they was in room 16/7 with her sister and parents. I look forward to hearing from you.

Subject: RE: Weihsien Form - PANDER Jeanne

Dear Liang Jingyao,

Thank you for reminding me ! Here is a personal memory dating back to 2 and 1/2 years before our libération :

In the train from Tientsin I remember the stops, and falling onto the dusty floor, slipping from the wooden seats.
I was 4 and 1/2years old, March 1943. My brother, almost 2, was in my mother’s arms, and both next to my father, on the opposite seat.

Next I remember being in the back of an open truck, driving along a bumpy road. Passing by Weihsien, I saw the marvellous city walls, their sight will stay in my memory for ever.

I was too small to see the gate as we arrived into camp, my next memory was of all our group of prisonners being told to line up along the walls of the « baseball field » for our first roll-call. Parents had some difficulty trying to keep their children from running around. The Japanese with their bayonets and guns were really very nervous. We stayed there for a long time. By the end of the day our family were given rooms in block 22.

Thank you to all of the Museum Team, with my very best regards,
Janette Ley Pander

Dear Jeanne Pander

Thank you very much for the completed form with your photo. The content of this form, is very important for us, and it help a lot for completing our production of relevant personal files.

You and also every survivor of the camp had took a lot contributions on the development of the museum. And also make that history of the camp time more concrete and detailed through the survivors described.

At the ceremony, we read the letter to the survivors of the concentration camp and in the letter we specifically mentioned our thanks to you, thank you for providing us with that much help and support with Mr. Leopold Pander.

I am wondering if you can provide more personal experience or things about the camp to us, that will be helpful. Look forward to your reply.

Thank you again for the help and support.
Best wishes
Liang Jingyao

Attn. LIANG JIANGYAO
From. Angela Cox Elliott

I was almost 2 years old on Aug 17 1945 & was taken for a walk by Maida Harris Campbell who lived upstairs.

We were caught up in the crowds when the gates opened to welcome the parachutists. Unfortunately I have no recollection of that long awaited day of rescue but I can well visualize the elation everyone must have felt on that most eventful day.

My great aunt was Sister Eustella Bush.
She was one of the first taken to Weihsien and was there until the 7 heroes parachuting into camp. She chose to stay when most of the Catholic priests and nuns left. She is my personal hero, and I am proud of the work she did in camp.

Dear Leopold,

Thank you for forwarding the message from Laing Jingyao.

How wonderful it is that we can celebrate the 76th anniversary of our liberation!

My wife, my daughter and I were so happy to be in Weifang for the 70th anniversary celebrations, and to meet a number of other ex- internees as well as Heather and Maureen, two of Eric Liddell’s daughters, and the wonderful Eddie Wang - the last surviving member of our brave liberators.

We were so pleased with the work that had been put into creating a permanent memorial and exhibition in the Shadyside Hospital building, and it is wonderful to know that this work continues even now, after over 3/4 of a century!

Here are two photos from our visit.

With Hakon Torjesen and Heather and Maureen née Liddell

and meeting Eddie Wang.

With warm regards,
Brian

We ― the surviving children of the Weihsien Concentration Camp 1943-1945 ― are very honoured to be remembered by our Chinese friends of Weihsien, now completely integrated in the large and modern city of Weifang.
I personally do not remember the hardships of the two and a half years spent under the Japanese law. I was still a baby when we arrived in March 1943 and then too young to realise the seriousness of the situation inside the camp. But I can affirm that I do remember our liberation by the Americans on August 17, 1945 ― firstly by my subconsciense (dreams & nightmares) and later on by all that I was told, by those who lived and remembered those unforgettable events.

Then, sixty years later, with the development of this new tool: “The World Wide Web” ― a website was created, now called: http://www.weihsien-paintings.org. This website is available worldwide and also to all our Chinese friends eager to learn more about their recent past.

You are all welcome to visit our website and ask questions to the surviving children of Weihsien liberated 76 years ago.

Best regards,
Leopold

Dear Leopold, thank you for forwarding our stories to miss. Liang Jingjao.
Hope you all are doing well.
Best wishes,
Anne de Jongh.

After all these years I still clearly remember our liberation day, August 17, 1945. As a girl of 15 years old, I felt the excitement of a crowd of people nearby, watching the sky and then I saw the plane dropping the 7 parachutists.

We were so elated and everyone was running towards the entrance gate and my father took my sister and me along, leaving mother behind with the younger children.

It was such a thrill to step outside the main gate- the first sensation of liberty after 2 1/2 years.
We were rescued and my new life began!

Each year we celebrate Aug. 15th as the official date, but for us it was Aug. 17th, when we realized that the war had ended and that we were free!

This joyful event in my life is dearly cherished, and I am most grateful that a ceremony will be held in our camp site to celebrate our Liberation Day! My thoughts are with you on Tuesday.

Anne de Jongh, from the Netherlands,
now 91 years of age.

Hi Dear Mr.Leopold Pander,

I'm Liang Jingyao. I don't know if you noticed that next Tuesday is the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Weihsien concentration camp. We are going to hold a ceremony to celebrate and commemorate. As we all know, all the ex-prisoners that imprisoned in the camp before are very important to this period of history, they are important and precious witnesses and experiencers of this history. Therefore we very much hope that you, if you can, to contact as many survivors as possible including you to provide some of your wishes, expectations or whatever you want to say for this special day. There are various way to do, you can write down the words on a paper with your name on it and take a picture and send by email; or you can record a video. It would be great if any of you can come and join the ceremony. Please give all of these to us before Monday, which is before August 16th, so that we can have time to prepare.

Please be sure to remind everyone not to forget to put their name on.Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions,I will respond as soon as possible.
