HI Leopold,
So enjoyed reading One leaf at a time by Sylvia Prince!
Mainly of days in camp — memories of a young girl — of course
much of the same has been written already but she gives
vivid descriptions from her point of view.
Feel as though I
went thru all of it after reading!

Cher Leopold,
Viviane.

Thanks, Leopold! It is very kind of you.
I am reading old books on the internet archive website(I found the suggestions on the China Channel website) and am waiting to hear back from archivists regarding photos of Helen Burton in her Peking home.
I am hopeful that someone will have heard of epehemera (guest book, posters, bills, letters) related to Burton and the Camel Bells that can throw further light on the years 1922-1953 that Bertha Lum spent in China. Her daughter married Sir Crowe and became Lady Eleanor/Peter Crowe. Her other daughter Catherine married Antonio Riva, who was executed by the regime for suspected plotting against Mao.
Many thanks to all of you who already contacted me and have a great summer!
Best regards,
Viviane.

Chère Viviane,
I will continue “in English” hoping that somebody might boost your research.
My sister, Janette (she is not computer savvy) ― still has a few old books about China on her bookshelves that could be of interest to you.
Let me know?
I will put them on the Weihsien-paintings’ website for you:

Viviane.

Objet: PhD research on Bertha Lum - looking for Helen Burton-related materials
Dear Sir,
Forgive me for reaching out; Terri Stewart had the kindnesss to pass it along, after I wrote to her via the Weihsien website, while browsing around trying to find information about Helen Burton.
My name is Viviane, I am currently writing a doctoral dissertation on American artist Bertha Lum, whose works or name you might have come across since it seems your personal history crossed paths with one other famous detainee, Helen Burton. Bertha Lum lived in China around the same years as Helen, probably attended some of her parties, and most importantly, exhibited and sold her artwork at the Camel’s Bells. I am looking to further document this established “business” relationship, and find whatever I may on the two women’s possible friendship and life in “Peking” as artists and working women.
I was wondering if you would be willing to assist in my research on Bertha. Primary sources are notoriously difficult to find for her (she lived and worked all over the world, survived an earthquake, two world wars, and a communist revolution!), and being able to see if there is any mention of her or of her works in the sources in your possession, or if anyone in your contacts might know about her, would be of tremendous help.
Forgive me again for writing without being introduced.
I hope that is not too much of an imposition.
I wish you all the best.
Sincerely,
Viviane.

Dear Sylvia,Yes sure ! 😊
I found that superb photo in Norman Cliff’s scrapbooks …
GoTo:
Menu → Weihsien → People → Chefoo Group → Norman Cliff → (scroll down ) → click on “Liberation Day” → (scroll down) → click once more on: “Liberation Day” and on the magnifying glass if you wish to ZOOM.
I think that my dad is approx. in the middle of the photo ― the fellow with sunglasses and his left arm raised to maybe salute the photographer.

Enjoy …
Best regards,
Leopold
P.S.: … don’t forget to read Sylvia’s book:
