Subject: Reunion after 77yrs

Maida Harris Campbell and I met last week on our trip to Prince Edward Island.

It was a great visit as Maida shared many of her memories with me. She couldn't actually say that she remembered my family. I had forgotten to take any photo of that era which might have jogged her memory.

There was something very special for me to meet a fellow Weihsiener after all this time. I think we must be the only Weihsieners in east of Montreal Canada.

It was a memorable afternoon with Roy and Maida in their lovely cottage on the coast, but all too short.

Maida is on the right of the photo.

Hi 😊

… the attachments are videos of ±2Gb each. Quite BIG though. Took me a whole day to download so don’t worry if you couldn’t download the URLs. They bring you to a mysterious Chinese website!!!
I transferred the whole thing on the Weihsien-paintings’ website for you all to see …

GoTo
http://weihsien-paintings.org/TheGroup/messages/2022-08/2022-08.htm

There are three videos in Chinese with subtitles for the first one only. I isolated a few of the cards sent to the museum with the (readable) text underneath. I have asked for the translations for the other cards but have not received them yet.

Best regards,
Leopold

Dear Leopold

Thank you very much for your forwarding and publicity in the early stage for the anniversary. We have received a lot of precious videos and cards, and receive everyone's beautiful hope for peace. On August 17, our museum held a series of activities to celebrate this important time. We collected cards from many places and made them into videos, which were broadcast in many social medias. On this day, the students of Guangwen Middle School walked into the Courtyard of the Happy Way and Weihsien Concentration Camp Museum and read the Declaration of International City of Peace together with us. This beautiful and memorable moment was also made into a video. Su Lijun, curator of the Courtyard of the Happy Way and Weihsien Concentration Camp Museum , also recorded a blessing video for the 77th anniversary of the liberation of Weihsien Concentration Camp, expressing his concern for the survivors of the Weihsien concentration camp, his greetings and his expectation for the future of the museum. These three videos are in the attachment. Due to the COVID-19, you guys aren't able to come. Hope that we can be closely connected through the videos and pass love and peace to each other.

Wish the COVID-19 end earlier. Take care.
Best wishes
The Courtyard of the Happy Way and Weihsien Concentration Camp Museum

Once again, we would like to thank all the people of the City of Weifang — recently honoured as "International City of Peace" — Mister Mayor and the whole Staff of the Weihsien Museum in Weifang for keeping alive the memory of World War II and of what had happened in this compound between March 1943 and October 1945 as well as for reminding the historical facts of that period in China.
Wishing you success in your mission,
Leopold Pander.

Dear Weifang friends,
My name is Janette Ley Pander, I am Belgian.
I was 4 1/2 years old when we were sent to Weihsien Concentration Camp as Japanese prisoners, March 1943, victims of World War II.
I still remember the watchtowers, the barbed wire, the high walls…
Today,77 years on, barbaric acts are still being committed.
People, mostly children, shouldn’t have to endure these horrible upheavals.
I am thankful that Weifang, International City of Peace, will yet again, as each year, send it’s generous message the world over.
Janette Ley-Pander.

I am 92 years old and was in Weihsien camp at age 15 when we were liberated. We were fortunate that our camp was not as bad as many and we were surrounded by family and teachery who allowed us to live as normal a life as possible. We have some good memories of the camp, of course, the liberation probably being the most exciting time of my life. It has made me appreciate a normal happy life since. War situations like made me realize that we must do our best to avoid that situation again. We have many groups in our world that are fanatical if we let them cause a situation like that again.
Maida Harris Campbell.

Here is my video in response to your request for the 77th anniversary of the liberation of Weihsien Camp.
Of course, there is always more that I'd like to say but hope this will do.
Am presently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with my daughter & family & departing for Seattle tonite.
It is a great pity we are not able to travel to see the new museum but hopefully my husband & I will be able to return to China & visit Weifang.
Thank you,
Angela Alliot.

Thank you for forwarding this on to me.
That Tipton was a Radio Operator for the British Navy brings is a detail that adds to the story.
At least two letters in the correspendence surrounding the escpe and what Tipton and Hummel did afterwards focus on radio communications

Dear Mr. Leopold,

Unfortunately, we don't know exactly when Tipton died. This is also what we have been looking for. If you know the specific time later, please inform us. But we do know that Laurance Tipton, who was born in Britain in 1909, served in the British Navy as a radio operator. There is also a book called Chinese Escaped, which details Tipton’s experiences and events that happened in China and the Weihsien Concentration Camp.Hope this helps.

All the best,

Subject: Laurance Tipton

I am writing about Tipton and Hummel now.

Tipton was born in 1909, and I doubt he is still alive, but I cannot find any sources telling me if he dies, when he died.

Can you help me with this?
