... From Eric Gustafson ...

Elizabeth Chandler Gustafson was born in a walled college compound outside the small town of Weihsien, Shantung Province, China. Her parents, Horace Chandler and Chloe Edgerton Chandler, were teachers and missionaries during the Chinese revolution of 1911, remaining in China until the Second World War. Her mother's diary on May 5, 1916 notes, "Under fire today from the battle in the city, so baby's bed was moved downstairs."

Elizabeth visited the U.S. in 1916 and 1925 but otherwise grew up in the Chinese port city of Tsingtao. She was home-schooled by her mother; both her parents were strong believers in a thorough education. In 1929 she was sent to the Pyongyang Foreign School in Korea. From there she went to Pittsburgh, where in 1933 she graduated from Allegheny High School. She graduated from Wooster College in Ohio in 1937 and went on for a Master's degree in Biology at the University of Michigan in 1939....
